Position Description


Position Title:  Abstinence Education Program Assistant Counselor


Reports To:  Abstinence Education Program Coordinator/Social Services Manager


Position Summary: Provides abstinence education instruction to program participants by assisting Lead Counselors, which includes coordinating, creating, and implementing structured lessons.  Assistant counselors must work with other AEP staff in achieving program goals. Work involves high level of contact with program participants, social service agencies, as well as, the community.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee the operations of the AEP under the supervision of the AEP Program Coordinator.
  2. Gain accurate and current knowledge of abstinence education and related information (including most recent statistics regarding teen pregnancy, STD’s, etc.)
  3. Takes and keeps accurate encounter reports, attendance, and contacts with participants, as well as, parents of participants.
  4. Responsible for assisting with scheduling and administering of pre/post surveys to participants.
  5. Ensures Weekly contacts are made to all program participants and parents
  6. Responsible for the recruitment of new participants and promoting the program
  7. Attend and help coordinate field trips and special events on regular basis.
  8. Assist in creating and distributing calendars, flyers, and other promotional materials to participants on regular basis.
  9. Oversee program activities and implementations in the absence of the AEP Lead Counselor.
  10. Perform other duties as directed by the AEP Administrators.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Ability to work with a large number of adolescent youth and relay abstinence education message.
  2. Ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing.
  3. Ability to keep accurate and current records (attendance, contacts, etc.)
  4. Ability to prepare and present ideas in a clear and concise manner.
  5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Authority employees, residents, program participants, representatives from community agencies and groups, school systems, and other partners.
  6. Ability to communicate with adolescent youth, parents, and others in reference to sexual related issues.
  7. Ability to work independently under broad guidance.
  8. Knowledge of modern office equipment including but not limited to copiers, personal computers, fax machines, etc.
  9. Ability to perform clerical skills effectively including Microsoft Office software, skills should include knowledge and experience using internet sources.
  10. Ability to transport youth in CHA approved vehicle(s) to and from program.


Minimum Education, Training, and/or Experience:

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent
  • One or more years of college
  • At least one year experience working with youth highly desirable.


Special Requirements:

  • Ability to be covered under the Authority’s vehicle, liability and fidelity insurance.
  • Possession of valid State of Georgia driver’s license.
